The first part of this project required us to select something we had written in the past and “repurpose” part or all of the argument for a new audience and venue. In choosing a topic for this assignment I grappled with two ideas: one was to write a formal essay on hydraulic fracturing and the other was to write a blog post on life paths after highschool. The deciding factor came down to that one word constantly flashing in my head: diversity. I could write an argumentative essay in my sleep. It wouldn't push me to explore a new style or tone. So instead, I chose to repurpose a creative non-fiction essay I wrote in English 325 about my friend Carly who is a professional dancer in the Washington Ballet Studio Company. The theme I took out of this paper was the idea of post high school options and following a path other than going to college. It's a topic I think about often, usually leaving me more confused and frustrated each and every time I do. I decided to repurpose this argument as a blog post for the online edition of the student run magazine Consider in which I argue that my community is set up in a way that leads students blindly towards college without truly thinking about their post high school decision.
